★SACD hybrid edition. The Russian National Orchestra continues the Shostakovich symphony series with the Pentatone label and has so far released the 4th, 10th and 11th symphonies with Pletnev, the 7th with Paavo Järvi, and the 1st and 6th with Jurowski. However, this time, No. 13 "Babi Yar" will appear, conducted by Kirill Karabits.
★"Babi Yar" is an incident in 1941 in which many Jews were murdered by German troops on the outskirts of Kiev. The Soviet poet Evtushenko wrote a protest poem about this, and a symphony was composed in 1962 using the lyrics. However, "Babi Yar" only has the first movement; the remaining four movements are based on Evtoshenko's epitaphic poems.
★Karabits performed Prokofiev's eccentric ``Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the Revolution'' (AU-97754) on the Audite label with splendid command and bursts of energy, and he also demonstrated his skill in ``Babi Yar.'' The tempo is passionate and fast, reminiscent of Kondrashin, but the 21st century objectivity shines through, giving an ideal performance.
★Bass soloist is Oleg Tsiburko from Moldova. She is an opera singer who performs with the Canadian Opera Company and other opera houses around the world. With her magnificent singing and good looks, she has the potential to become a star in the future. Along with the male chorus, the powerful world is captured in its entirety on SACD.
